Plain JSON collects nothing, transmits nothing, and contacts no server.
There is no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting, no advertising, no affiliate code, and no third-party library of any kind in this extension.
Plain JSON is a browser extension that renders JSON documents as a collapsible tree and provides a paste-and-format tool.
What data the extension handles
| Data | What happens to it |
|---|---|
| The JSON document you are viewing | Parsed and rendered in your browser only. Never copied, stored, or transmitted. |
| Text you paste or files you drop into the formatter | Read locally in the page. Never copied, stored, or transmitted. |
| Your display preferences — theme, language, font, font size, expand depth | Stored with chrome.storage.local on this device only. Not synced, not transmitted. |
The extension writes no cookies, sets no identifiers, and does not fingerprint your device or browser.
What the extension does not do
- It makes no network requests. The source contains no
fetch,XMLHttpRequest, sendBeacon,WebSocket, remote script, or remote stylesheet. This is enforced by an automated check that fails the build if any URL appears in the source outside a two-entry allowlist: the vendor website linked in the settings panel, and the SVG XML namespace identifier, which is never fetched. - It does not read, store, or transmit page content from sites you visit. On any document that is not JSON, the content script performs a single content-type check and stops.
- It does not sell or share data with anyone, because it has none.
- It contains no remotely hosted code. All code ships inside the package.
Why the extension asks for access to all sites
JSON can be served from any URL, so the content script must be allowed to
look at any page in order to notice a JSON document. What it actually does on
a non-JSON page is one string comparison against
document.contentType, after which it returns and does nothing
else.
The only declared permission beyond that is storage, used
solely for the display preferences listed above.
Your data, your device
Because nothing leaves your browser, there is nothing for us to disclose,
sell, delete, or hand over. To remove the stored preferences, uninstall the
extension or clear its storage from chrome://extensions.
Children
The extension is a developer tool and is not directed at children. It collects no data from anyone, of any age.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be published at this URL with a new “last updated” date. Any change that introduced data collection would also require a new permission prompt or a new store listing disclosure.
Source code
The extension is open source. Every claim on this page can be verified by reading the code.
